UNIVERSITY of WISCONSIN-PLATTEVILLE - MARKEE PIONEER STUDENT CENTER
Platteville, Wisconsin
KEE Architecture designed a new student union to replace the aging Ullsvik Center on the UW-Platteville campus. The programming and planning process led to the selection of a new, centrally-located site to better serve the needs of students and campus community.
The facility includes marketplace-style foodservice, with kitchen and support spaces; convenience store; conference space with catering; offices for administration and student organizations; computer labs; bookstore; meeting/classrooms and lobby spaces. All public functions are located on two interconnected floors, with activities and spaces organized around a central spine. Spaces vary in scale, from grand to intimate, comfortable for use by large groups as well as individual students.
The facility was built for the future, using durable materials and solid construction, yet with inherent flexibility to accommodate the ever-changing needs of college students, including emerging technologies.
Despite challenges that included site constraints and a tight budget, the UW-Platteville Pioneer Student Center has been a resounding success. Since opening, it has seen a dramatic increase in student activity and retail volume, becoming the signature building on campus.
