LUSSIER COMMUNITY EDUCATION CENTER

Madison, Wisconsin

This 12,300 square foot facility is designed to operate efficiently in an instructive, hands-on manner. The geothermal system is monitored online, providing feedback so that occupants can adjust equipment use or in their own behavior. Operable windows are situated throughout, using natural convection to expel air through windows high over the central space. We expect that air conditioning will be needed only two weeks per year. The building detailing is crisp and straightforward, enhancing awareness by users of the elements of enclosure. It strives to merge an aesthetic sensibility with a participatory, ecological response to program, site and construction.
